Password recovery steps for CISCO 2600 routers and 2800 Integrated Services Router

cisco

Welcome to the cisco password recovery tutorial. Here we will see how can we recover our router password. You can recover enable password . The enable secret password is encrypted so it will replaced with new password. These passwords protect access to privileged EXEC and configuration modes.

CISCO 2600 and 2800 Password Recover

there are two method to recover your router password

Method 1

Step 1. Connect a terminal / PC with terminal emulation to the console port of the router and use those settings.

Settings:

• 9600 baud rate
• No parity
• 8 data bits
• 1 stop bit
• No flow control

Step 2. If you can access the router, type show version at the prompt, then record the configuration register setting.

Note : Configuration register is normally set to 0x2102 or 0x102. If you can no longer access the router, you can assume that your configuration register is set to 0x2102.

Step 3. Turn off the router, and then turn the router on.

Important Notes :

• To simulate this step on a Cisco 6400, pull out and then plug in the Node Route Processor (NRP) or Node Switch  Processor (NSP) card.
• To simulate this step on a Cisco 6×00 with NI-2, pull out and then plug in the NI-2 card.

Step 4. Press Break on the terminal keyboard within 60 seconds of power up in order to put the router into ROMmon.

If the break sequence does not work, use those key combinations table below.

Step 5. You have to bypasses the startup configuration where the passwords are stored. To do this you need to boot from Flash, Type confreg 0x2142 at the rommon 1> prompt in order .

Step 6. Type reset at the rommon 2> prompt. The router will reboot, don’t save any configuration.

Step 7. Then skip initial setup procedure. Type no after each setup question, or press Ctrl-C.

Step 8. Type enable at the Router> prompt for entering in enable mode and you will see the Router# prompt.

Step 9. Type configure memory or copy startup-config running-config to copy NVRAM(nonvolatile RAM) into memory.

Warning : Don’t apply copy running-config startup-config or write. This will clear the startup configuration.

Step 10. Send the show running-config command.

Note : show running-config command shows you the router configuration. Enable password, Enable secret, Console, VTY passwords are in encrypted or unencrypted format. Unencrypted passwords is reusable. But encrypted passwords have to changed to a new password.

Step 11. Type configure terminal. The hostname(config)# prompt appears.

Step 12. After doing that you need to enable secret password. Type enable secret <password>. Here is an example:

Code : hostname(config)#enable secret cisco

Step 13. Send no shutdown command on every interface.

Step 14. Type config-register <configuration_register_setting> . Its a value to configure a register. Here is an example:

hostname(config)#config-register 0x2102

Step 15. Then leave the configuration mode by pressing Ctrl-z.

Step 16. To make changes type write memory or copy running-config startup-config.

Method 2

Step 1. Shut down the router.

Step 2. Remove the compact flash that is at the back of the router.

Step 3. Power on the router.

Step 4. Once the Rommon1> prompt appears, enter this command:

Code : confreg 0x2142

Step 5. Insert the compact flash.

Step 6. Type reset.

Step 7. When you are prompted to enter the initial configuration, type No, and press Enter.

Step 8. At the Router> prompt, type enable.

Step 9. At the Router# prompt, enter the configure memory command, and press Enter in order to copy the startup configuration to the running configuration.

Step 10. Use the config t command in order to enter global configuration mode.

Step 11. Use this command in order to create a new user name and password:

router(config)#username cisco privilege 15 password
cisco

Step 12. Use this command in order to change the boot statement:

config-register
0x2102

Step 13. Use this command in order to save the configuration:

write
memory

Step 14. Reload the router, and then use the new user name and password to log in to the router.

2800 Integrated Services Router password recover

Follow those steps to recover your router password

Step 1. Switch off / Shut down the router.

Step 2. On the rear of the router you will see a compact flash, remove it.

Step 3. Turn the router switch on.

Step 4. It will be on Rommon mode, then reinsert the compact flash.

Step 5. To boot from flash type confreg 0x2142 at the rommon 1> prompt. It will bypasses the startup configuration where the passwords are stored.

Step 6. Type reset at the rommon 2> prompt. The router will reboots, but ignores the saved configuration.

Step 7. You have to skip the initial setup procedure. To do this type no after each setup question, or you can press Ctrl-C.

Step 8. Now enter in enable mode. Type enable at the Router> prompt. You can see the Router# prompt.

Step 9. Copy the NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) into memory. To do this type configure memory or copy startup-config running-config.

Warning: Don’t apply copy running-config startup-config or write.

Step 11. Type configure terminal. hostname(config)# prompt will appears.

Step 12. After doing that you need to enable secret password. Type enable secret <password>. Here is an example:

hostname(config)#enable secret cisco
